International Students

Welcome to Royal Oak Primary School and our provisions for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) education.   Anne-Marie Jammes, our trained specialist teacher and our specially equipped ESOL room are a feature of our school and valued by our staff and community. Students enjoy opportunities for specialised teaching in small groups and quickly form close relationships with both Anne-Marie and the school staff.

The ESOL teacher has created an attractive and comfortable teaching space with charts and posters, first language labels and student work on display.  The room is well resourced and students enjoy a range of relevant topics of interest as well as specialised English teaching tailored to support the class programmes.

Students are carefully assessed upon arrival at the school in order to ascertain their levels of English.  They are carefully placed in mainstream classrooms where it is found that English acquisition is accelerated.  Additional support is given to these students in their mainstream classrooms as required by trained support staff.

Teachers at Royal Oak Primary School are renowned for their inclusive and supportive relationships with students and for the extremely high calibre teaching and attention to academic progress. ESOL students are catered for with care and understanding of their unique situation within a New Zealand primary school.

Support staff are timetabled to work in different classrooms providing in-classroom support with literacy and maths to targeted students.  They are also able to provide more intensive support for newly arrived students.

Royal Oak Primary School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available by following the links below.
